Graduate Record Examination in short GRE is a standard test which is an admission requirement for graduate schools in United States for the purpose of Master’s degree and doctoral degree. GRE is created and administrated by ETS (Educational Testing Service); GRE mainly concentrates on Verbal reasoning, Quantitative reasoning and Analytical Thinking.GRE is a computer based general test conducted only at selected centers such as Prometric testing and Non-prometic centers.
The Score acquired in GRE is valid for 5 years after the date exam conducted. Scores for GRE are published on the exam date itself.The duration of GRE exam is for 3 hours 45 minutes including breaks.One who wants to attend GRE exam must register with ETS Official Website. The cost to take the test is US$205(once check again fee because some times change fee) which is to be paid by a credit card or Else. For writing GRE one must book the available slot on the desired date.
The basic structure of Computer based GRE exam consists of 6 sections. The first section is always Analytical Writing.Analytical Writing consists of two tasks: Issue and argument task. In Issue Task, a topic is given and will be asked to present your opinion on it within the given time. Time for this task is 30min. In Argument task, an argument is given and will be asked to critique the argument. Time for this task is same as Issue Task (30 min).
The next five sections consist of Quantitative and verbal reasoning sections. Two sections are verbal and two are on quantitative, the remaining section maybe a verbal or a quantitative which an extra section. This extra section is called “Experimental Section”. The questions given in this section are the new questions considered for future use by ETS. This section is not included in evaluation but cannot be distinguished.
The time duration given to verbal reasoning section is 30 min and for Quantitative reasoning section 35 min.The perfect Score in Verbal and Quantitative reasoning is 170 and the least possible score in each is 130. Verbal Section assesses reading comprehension, critical reasoning and Vocabulary. Each verbal section consists have 20 questions to be answered in 30min. These 20 questions are of 6 text completion, 4 sentence equivalence and 10 critical reasoning.
Quantitative section assesses basic high school level Maths Knowledge and reasoning skills. Each quantitative section consists of 20 questions to be completed in 35 minutes. Each quantitative section consists of about 8 quantitative comparisons, 9 problem solving items, and 3 data interpretation questions.Many graduate schools in the United States require GRE results as part of the admissions process.
